End of Life Doula

There are many names for us. End of Life Doula. Deathwife. Death Doula. Death Midwife. We have been around for centuries, supporting people at the end of their lives to stay at home to die, to be looked after by their family and their community. But somewhere along the way this natural and accepted process of dying and death became a feared, sterile and medicalised process, leaving the dying person feeling isolated and scared.

As an End of Life Doula my capacity is non-medical and non-clinical, providing a bridge between the medical care team and individuals, their families and carers. My role is to provide options, not to give advice.

I can come in at any point from when a terminal diagnosis is given or someone is nearing the end of their life. I can walk with and journey with them until the last breath is taken, providing support, education and advocacy. And afterwards I can support the families and carers by assisting and supporting in funeral arrangements.

There is so much to navigate in this space, and when emotions are running high I am that stable and steady force, offering support and care.

Ways I am able to support

The work of an End of Life Doula is unique and bespoke for each person. The ways in which I am able to support you include, but aren't limited to:

  • Facilitating discussions about end-of-life preferences between individuals and their loved ones.

  • Educating loved ones about end-of-life.

  • Providing respite care.

  • Providing emotional support, either over the phone or in person.

  • Assisting with organising keepsakes or legacy pieces for loved ones.

  • Attending medical appointments with individuals or family members.

  • Liaising with additional support services as needed.

  • Planning a funeral and/or a living wake.

  • Providing a presence during the time of death (vigil).

  • Offering grief and bereavement support for loved ones after death.

  • I can educate and inform regarding the various legal documents that are highly recommended to have completed: Advance Care Directive, Power of Attorney, Enduring Power of Attorney, Enduring Guardian and Will.

  • I can assist in the creation of an Emotional Will.

  • I can provide or assist with de-cluttering or clearing estates.

  • Organising cool plate hire (an extra cost) which will enable you to keep your loved one at home after death has occurred. A cool plate slows down the process which means you can have extra time with them before they are picked up by your chosen funeral director.

If there is something that you need that wasn't listed above, please get in touch.
